CHRIST YOUR LIFE

His life as your life

GROWING TO YOUR FULL STATURE

Eternal life is to know God and Jesus Christ whom God has sent. Since Jesus Christ is God in fullness, knowing God is an opportunity that is ours if we are willing to know God through the Jesus lens. Since He is God and also one of us He is designed exquisitely to meet our needs in seeing and knowing God.

What this amounts to is very simple. We know God as God
through God. And we know who God is through a human being who is God in His fullness.

TRAINED INSENSIBILITY

14 ‘In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,          ‘You will keep on hearing, but will not understand;          you will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
15 For the heart of this people has become dull,          with their ears they scarcely hear,          and they have closed their eyes,          otherwise they would see with their eyes,          hear with their ears,          and understand with their heart and return,          and I would heal them.’ Matt 13.14-15.
Living in the old covenant we have unhealed eyes and unhealed ears.

KNOWING GOD

We cannot ‘unknow God’ unless we are very stubborn and very dull – like the people above and like dwarves in the prison in C. S. Lewis’s The Last Battle. They refused to eat their rations and called them slops. Actually the contents of the pale was a banquet served in the presence of their enemies. The dwarves are like believers who on hearing the real gospel say. ‘But don’t we already know that.’ Sadly they do not. They know much of religion and little of the Kingdom.

JESUS LENS

So this is it: We know God as He is through the Jesus Lens. We know Him and His Kingdom when He Himself is our life. This is the lens that is both God and a human being. Thomas Torrance puts it this way.

Strictly speaking, as Irenaeus pointed out, only God can know himself so that it is only through God that God may be known. Since God alone exists within his own eternity and infinity, only he can know himself in a way that is strictly in accordance with who God is, proportionate to his being and commensurate with his nature as God. Hence if we are really to know God it can be only through sharing in some incredible way in the knowledge which God has of himself That is to say, we can know God only if he brings us into communion with him in the inner relations of his own being as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This sharing in the knowledge that God has of himself was made possible through the incarnation of God’s Son and his mediation of the Spirit of the Father and the Son. In the incarnation God communicated himself to us in Jesus Christ his beloved Son, not something about himself, but his very Self.” (1)

WHAT LENS IS YOURS?

Notice there is nothing about the law here. That’s because the law is irrelevant. God is who God is. The I AM of God is seen in Himself. His fullness is revealed in the trinity and His character and nature is demonstrated in the person of Jesus Christ. Who you are is seen in the person of Jesus and who you are becoming as a son is revealed in the day to day expression of Christ in you – in what John called ‘Christ come in your flesh.’

‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life’ John 6.63 NIV.

We may take a talk on a topic like the spirit of sonship in the letter or in the spirit. If in the spirit, Christ will be our life, we will be sonship and speak out the words of a son with spirit and life – with the spirit and life of a son of God who is a son not in the letter but a son in spirit and in truth.
