Jesus did not only bring us eternal life. He gave us A LIFE – HIS LIFE. TODAY. Left to our own devices and impressions we can live a shrivelled life. Then again we can live a robust, full and animated existence because we have claimed Jesus Himself as our life. There is infinite life in Paul’s statement: Christ our life.
Old covenant, living from the knowledge of good and evil, the flesh and the letter are all parts of the same thing – living from religion. We were made to live in God and since the cross have been placed back in Father by Jesus. We can live in life or death. That’s sounds a contradiction but it is real. One can live a robust religious life yet be a corpse. But one can live in Jesus and simply be oneself and release rivers of living water. Take care how you see. Some think what they are releasing is living water when it’s quite a different liquid.
We have the old covenant and the new; a life in Adam or a life in Jesus. The law and the spirit are opposites. One is dead. The other is alive. ‘The law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death’ Rom 8.2 NIV. The law of the Spirit of life is the person of Jesus. Living in His resurrection we have spirit and life. Jesus live in this spirit and life and lives in you so that you can ignite dead people and dead things with its eternal power. ‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you - they are full of the Spirit and life’ John 6.63 NIV.
You might rejoice in the fact that you have a non-sectarian outlook. But you cannot celebrate a life in God if you are dragging around the ball and chain of the law and old covenant. Your false hope surfaces because you have adopted a pluralist outlook in which you assume that your perspective is as legitimate as that of the next denomination. But it’s not. Not if you are tied to the law. Here we are bound to the body of death that Jesus has liberates us from.
So how can anyone be tied to the body of death and be the Body of Christ?
The new covenant is the one and only medium of the Kingdom of God. There is no other. Any perspective that attempts to draw life from things not Jesus may be a version of religion. But it is not the Kingdom of heaven. No perspective that has you using Jesus to do Moses will do. That’s just nonsense. Neither will a perspective suffice in which your identity in your denomination is shared with your identity in Christ. It’s all of Jesus or nothing. You are and the Father are one or you are not. We enjoy union with God when Jesus is the only one. You are spiritually alive because Jesus is your life. You are a righteous son because His righteous life is you.
‘I and the Father are one’ John 10.30 NIV.
WHAT IS YOUR WINESKIN
When Jesus talked about patching old wineskins he was talking about the old covenant. No amount of rubbing the oil of the Holy Spirit into the old covenant system and structure will resurrect it from the dead. Instead the attempt to live out of such a hybrid promotes a more subtle form of death. Look to yourself and take no comfort in illusions.
‘He told them this parable: "No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old’ Luke 5,36 NIV.
One can experience the anointing without living in the Spirit. This was common in the old testament. There was no incarnation in those day. Neither could it be truthfully said that we and our Father were one. But it can now. You live in the new – the age of the Spirit. Some have cobbled together a religion of law plus spiritual gifts. But they live without vision and without life. All that begins well fades. They walk in the embers of past fires.
Living in the old covenant, it looks easier to be religious than it does to live in the Spirit. It’s not though. In religion you live from the parts instead of the whole. You think the parts are the whole. Your random acts of religion and assorted Bible studies express the knowledge of good and evil. But not the knowledge or life of God. Jesus calls you to to express Him – not propositions, abstractions and rules. When He is your life, you express Him. You live because Christ lives in you. This is His life in the new covenant. His life in you and as you. You are a son, a daughter of God. You plant Jesus and multiply sons and daughters for God.
‘He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life’ 2 Cor 3.6 NIV.
