His life as your life

Why was the widow praised by Jesus? She gave her entire self and her well-being to God. Religiosity can give us a false sense of piety. A piety made from offering bits of the self.

Many religious people are not hypocritical. But they can have involved themselves in a trivial pursuit. We should understand that good deeds do not necessarily make us good people. God transfused into our being makes us good people. There are folks who make a brand of ‘christianity’ out of the selection of good things they do. But they have little interest in the Spirit of God transfusing their being. They define their own passport, their own ‘gospel’ and their own version of God. These folks can have a very asymmetrical morality.

In Jesus Christ God, made a way of being our righteousness – through forgiveness of sins and manifesting His Spirit in us. Grace is a righteousness that is not ours and a life that is not ours – but lived in us by the Spirit. It’s God in us. In this manner we live as sons of God in the spirit of sonship. The law, far from being the core of Christian life is what God replaced with Himself. Christ in you is the hope of glory. There is nothing of glory or love in the law because it is all of condemnation.

A gospel of condemnation does not come from God. We should reject and repent of ‘gospels’ that intimate that if people displease God he will kill them. Such gospels differ from Islam only in degree.

Designating whole groups of people to hell as Israel Folau does is just as misguided as believing we are on our way to heaven because we have attached ourselves to one or two denominational distinctives.

Folau’s ‘word’ is not ‘the word of God’ as he maintains. God’s word is Jesus Christ. He is the life of the world and there is no condemnation in Him. Jesus is the sinner’s hope just as Jesus is the solution to gospels of behavior modification. The difference between Folau’s gospel and the gospel of Jesus and Paul is the difference between the knowledge of good and evil and our life in God. Michael Kapler writes,

“The only way to be freed from the curse of the law was to be delivered from all of it, not portions of it. The law and commandments given to Israel that came through Moses was not a demonstration of God’s love, because it brought wrath, death and condemnation.

The unconditional love of God was demonstrated to us by the death of Jesus Christ and this love has been poured into our hearts through the new ministry of the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (see Romans 5: 5-8). If the system of relating to God through religious rules sounds like a familiar burden in your own life, you’ve been exposed to the “ol’ covenant combo.” We have a new guarantee in Christ and it is far better.” (1)

Paul spoke of ‘Christ our life’ because He is. Our life is not meant to be a combination of Jesus and religious rules. No ‘two masters’ here. Christ is entirely our life. Our adventure is to drop off idols and false christs so that He can entirely live out His life through us.

‘Realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV.
