His life as your life

Paul declared ‘Christ our life’ to be the new and living way of daily life and eternal life in the post cross age. Jesus spoke of Himself as the way the truth and the life. Richard Rohr observes that in saying this, Jesus Christ is “Describing the “Way” by which all humans and all religions must allow matter and Spirit to operate as one.” It’s done in Him.(1)

New Testament Truth is that the trinity manifests in your person.

Jesus Christ was God come in Jesus of Nazareth. You living as a son of God is Jesus come as you. In John this is called Christ come in the flesh. It is the way in which the Spirit of God manifests as you and as all who believe. Thus we have the formation of the Body of Christ.

The propensity of any Believer to become stuck in the law and for some communities to make a version of ‘christianity’ out of the law, is one of the most tragic wild goose chases of the post cross age. It circumvents Christ come in our flesh, undoes the Spirit of Jesus manifesting as you and leaves us rotting like dead rib-cages in the externalities of religion. Christ and the trinity are inherently in all people. God is actively in us when we believe Jesus and attach ourselves to His Christ, His gospel and not some false narrative posing as a gospel of life.

The following is a prophecy of Christ come in the flesh of human beings.

‘Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!  This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.  I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord’
Ez 37.4-6 NIV.

Life in the Spirit is not actually the gifts or the anointing. Life in the Spirit is union with God – Christ come in our flesh. They are of course related. The gifts of the Spirit are the branches of the vine that is us in Christ and Christ in us.

Adding the gifts to the law and old covenant is an exercise in futility. Jesus clearly instructed that we cannot successfully patch old clothes with a new garment. What is the new and living way? It’s not just a change of clothes – not a more able version of the knowledge of good and evil or a divine empowerment of the law of Moses. It is Christ your life, Christ as you, the trinity woven into your being. Now we are sons in spirit and in truth.

The Eastern church has a sacred word for this process, which we in the West call “incarnation” or “salvation.” They call it “divinization” (theosis). If that sounds provocative, know that they are only building on 2 Peter 1:4, where the author says, “He has given us something very great and wonderful . . . you are able to share the divine nature!” This is Christianity’s core good news and only transformative message.” (2)
