Sacrifice was an integral part of old testament religion. But it should not be the core of your living. His burden is light and not really a burden. Nevertheless Believers can attempt to live out a mode of sacrifice in order to gain the favour of God.
The good news is that we are already in favour.
Jesus the Lamb of God is the sacrifice that takes away the sin of the world. ‘Sin’ is primarily what results from separation from God and going one’s own way as with Adam and Eve. Righteousness is union with God and more. It is being part of God as sons and daughters and thus becoming the very expression of God as Jill and George.
Post cross living is not about ‘sacrifice’ or ‘contract.’ It is our achieving Godliness in union with God. Our inheritance is Christ in you. Jesus declared this when He heralded Himself as the Way, the truth and the life.
Neither is it primarily about sin and sin management. Godliness is our union with God – a union that is now yours. Woven into God we are blessed by the extinguishing of multiple degradations and lies about God that we know as sin. The fruits of the Spirit are the result of Christ as you.
The life of God is found neither in religious motifs or sacraments. Life is found neither in the law or religion: Life is God in you. Paul was specific in this when He spoke of Christ our life. Jesus is not the means to righteousness in some list. Neither is He the Supervisor of His own religion as the mediator of life. God is His own mediator. Jesus Himself is our life and our righteousness. He is the Door to our union with the trinity and their union with us – a union and a fellowship that is already a fact.
Law adherence today is a diversion and a wild goose-chase. The issue is Christ your life which means Jesus in you and Jesus as you. Sons and daughters of God are the manifestation of the trinity. This is life in the Spirit. This mode of life is not Holy Spirit bolted onto the law and the old covenant.
“The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming-not the realities themselves . For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. HEBREWS 10:1 The Mosaic Law, with its commandments regarding sacrifice, was merely a shadow of a pre-existing reality that had not yet made its way into linear time.
The work of Christ was accomplished in the mind of the Godhead long before creation, and had as its shadow the Old Testament sacrificial practices. Like any shadow, it was rather obscure and uninformative. Shadows don’t speak, and are therefore unable to tell their own story. (1)
Christ come in the flesh means that the Spirit of Christ manifests as you, Jill and Mike. You don’t become Jesus. You are not God. But the Spirit of Jesus is expressed in the uniqueness of you. You came from God. You are redeemed by God. God lives in you and expresses His Spirit in you. You are a son of your Father in spirit and in truth.
The story of who God is and what His love looks like is Jesus Christ. The story of who you are as son/daughter of God is being written. By you. As Jesus is God’s word manifest so are you – because Christ is your life and you are the expression of Him.
