AVOID NOTHING GOSPELS
Thanks to the enterprise of the trinity we have a kingdom of spirit and life that has completely undone the regime of ‘death- in- life’ that was set in train by Adam. I mean the culture of the knowledge of good and evil in which humans are never fully alive and their season of mixed pleasure and pain ends in the extinction of hope and physical death. This Kingdom that began with the cross and arose with Christ at His resurrection is yours when you embrace it as it is. You are now in the sphere of God’s life. You are in fellowship with the family of God and your position there is guaranteed by the life of Jesus – and never put in jeopardy by our erratic attempts and maintaining the good. You are one with God. God receives and love you as you are. Not as you should be. This state of affairs is the ground of your sonship and the promise of your increasing glory as the person you were created to be. This is the new covenant, the new wineskin and the born again you in which Christ is your life.
There will be no rehash of the knowledge of good and evil – not even with Jesus’ help. The pre-cross state of affairs is gone and the separation of God and humanity is over. In Jesus God is part of you and you are part of God. This is the incarnation. But you must realise it, live in it and embrace it to the extent that you eat it and it becomes part of you. This is you eating the son of man and drinking His blood: The Lord’s Table realised in your life.
A CUNNING FABLE
The new testament is not a new way of doing the fall. An unfortunate and life-robbing idea can be found in the notion that we can revive the old wineskin by rubbing Holy Spirit oil into it. This can result from not understanding what the cross was about. But it is more often grounded in the fiction that the new wineskin is salvation per se. It is not. The new wineskin is the NEW AND LIVING WAY; the new covenant – an agreement reached entirely without us BUT FOR US so that the life of God and the life of human beings is made one.
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20
The new covenant is not the old covenant modified or the law of sin and death given a ‘Jesus boost.’ It. Is a completely new arrangement in which all that Adam began and precipitated is undone and life in the Spirit is begun. The new covenant that began with the death of Jesus is the end of our life in the knowledge of good and evil and the start of our life in God. The notion that God will put new life into the results of eating of the fruit of the tree by virtue of an application of holy spirit anointing has no more credence that the belief that Jesus came to preserve the fall.
WRONG IDEAS FROM BLIND GUIDES
The idea that Jesus will re-invigorate Adam with a holy Spirit tonic is a fiction that should be extinguished in the truth that God re-invigorates and restores our dead Adamic spirits by exchanging His life for ours. It is a totally new and living way. This is the meaning of Paul’s summation of the new covenant in Galatians 2.20 and the warning in Galatians 2.21. ‘I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!’
Don’t live from a ‘nothing gospel’ when you gave an everything gospel in Jesus.
Dr Stephen Crosby writes, “If we master the content of the Scripture and have no savour or aroma of Christ, we are like a man holding a legitimate ticket, but who has missed his boat. It doesn’t matter how factual your ticket is, how everything on that ticket is true, how well you can explain the ticket, and defend its veracity. It exists to serve a purpose and you have missed it.”
But this is us if we remain tied to the law and the old covenant. We may be literate in Christianity and devoid of the spirit and life that is Christ our life. Why? Because new covenant living is union with God. Not being well versed in the knowledge of good and evil. In such a state we can be positionally correct about the body of Christ. Yet cut-off from the reality. Because we are united with the letter that kills and not yet interwoven in the union with God that is Christ our life.
