We can live in a formal baptism or we can live in the continual baptism and rebirth of the Holy Spirit. One is a figment of the letter and the other is the reality of Christ our life. The life of the sons and daughters of God is one of continual renewal and advance into a more complete humanity and a realised sonship in relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
A STATE OF BEING – SONS OF GOD
Incarnation, Christ our life, Christ come in our flesh is our inheritance. It means God becomes us. In Jesus God became a human being. By the Spirit of sonship God becomes you. We are our Father’s sons and daughters by origin. Yet the more powerful transformational fellowship and nurture comes from the reality that in Jesus by the Spirit, we are the sons of God.
GOD’S LIFE AS YOURS
Much of what has been taught as Christianity is somewhat misguided since its focus is sin. This is not the prime focus of the new testament, although you would think it is by what you hear. Yesterday I listened to a formal prayer from a prayer book that was mainly about ourselves as sinners and a plea for Jesus to forgive us for them. ‘Sin consciousness and preoccupation with sin’ may pass as common piety but it is not the life of God or the essence of our inheritance. We are forgiven for our sins in the person of Jesus. He is our forgiveness. But this is the prelude to life – life without limit. This is our life that is from Him and called by Paul, Christ our life.
LIFE TO THE FULL
Most Christianity is not life to the full because it is a religion instead of an incarnation. Thus we find Jesus saying, ‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’ John 10.10 NIV. We need to understand that in committing to a sin-focussed gospel we are committing theft. It’s a peasants gospel – a poverty mentality in which we focus on scarcity instead of the abundant life that Christ is for us. In Jesus, our sins are not held against us, while His life in us liberates us from false notions of God and from the degradations that beset us. You have been received into His life. What counts in your enjoyment of this fellowship is not your success in overcoming sins but the reality that His life is your life.
‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit’ Rom 8.1-4 NIV.
You can know the truth that sets you free. You can be cut loose from false christs and liberated from ‘other gospels.’ Pray this prayer:
“Lord Jesus Christ, beloved, eternal, and faithful Son of the Father incarnate, thank you for sharing your knowledge of the Father’s heart with me. Come into my darkness with your light. Search out my blindness and share your unearthly assurance with me in the place of my deepest fears. Find all my broken parts and bathe them with your Father’s love. Send your Spirit to baptize my soul with your peace.” (1)
