His life as your life

Jesus is never somewhere else. He is in you, with you and woven into your being. We call this life in the Spirit, which of an entirely different nature to life in the law and the letter. It’s His life as ours.

When the Bible reinforces our dependence on Jesus we are greatly blessed. It tells us that Christ is our life. Religious motions do not improve our state of being. It’s not reading the Bible that makes us a better person. Or going to church. It’s Jesus Himself. This is the meaning of the Lord's Table. He becomes us just as food and drink become us.

This is our new covenant life in spirit and in truth - Jesus manifesting as our person. And then as our community. We become what we eat. Eat a diet of burgers and chips and the result will be seen in our bodies and take effect in our minds. When we eat Jesus in His fullness and resist the junk food of the old covenant or ‘other gospels’ we manifest His life and the life of the trinity.

Such a life is not religious motions or Christian pieties. It is agreeing with Jesus that we have been drawn into His fellowship in the trinity and that God lives in us. We become holy because God is holy since God is woven by the Spirit, into our being.

Jesus said ‘Those who eat me will live because of me.’ He is the food and drink of life. In eating Jesus we become sons in spirit and in truth. Christ our life births sons of God, who manifest the Kingdom of God. Sons are not people who have adopted a moral agenda or a bunch of behaviors. They are not in Adam. Neither are they in Moses with a Jesus additive. They are in Christ and Christ is in them. They are people through whom Jesus manifests in their flesh by His Spirit. In a new covenant mindset, you are in God and God is in you. This is His doing and it is the gift of infinite life.

‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14, 20. Realise this now. You will change from notional sons to sons in spirit and in truth. You will be transformed from notional members of Christ’s Body to become living expressions of Jesus, our Father and Holy Spirit.

If we read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, we will see Him in the stories and teachings. Of ourselves we have no power to replicate them. But Jesus will be these things in us. He manifests the Spirit of Sonship in your being. This is the meaning of the living word. This is the word made flesh and alive in us and manifesting as George and Margaret. The new covenant is entirely holistic and is the one and only whole person approach. The law can never produce whole people. The supposition that the law can produce whole people is an oxymoron.

Christ our life means Christ our grace. We are graced with His life as ours. Our deformities are covered in Him even as we are being changed into an expression of Himself. We can live a pure and gracious life because Jesus is living His purity and grace through us. This is Christ come in our flesh: The core of the new testament age. This is how we live as sons and daughters in the spirit of sonship.

Sure, we can live from the law or from a bunch of self selected elements of the knowledge of good and evil that make us look good and pander to our denominational upbringing. But we will never be fully human or fully alive, much less sons of God and life-giving spirits who are Jesus multiplied in the earth. As Paul warns, we will remain workers and slaves.

‘Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children’ Gal 4.25 NIV.

We can be phantoms of our potential selves or we can be flesh and blood life-giving spirits. Moralising, law-keeping and letter-mongering gives the illusion of honouring God. This appears as a solid and substantial expression of spirituality. But like any fixation with metrics it denudes the fixated of life. Living from such a mindset slanders God and shrivels our being. As solid as law-generated living may appear it makes us ghosts of who we really are - sons of God with Jesus manifesting through our being.

‘This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God’ 1 John 4.2 NIV. Jesus in you does not manifest the law. He manifests Himself, our Father and the Spirit. This is why those who eat His flesh and drink His blood are alive as persons and sons of God and those who settle for religious substitutions and denominationally contrived variations are not. Their tragedy is that they think they are.

‘Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you’ John 6.53 NIV. In this mode we are not alive and have diminished light and truth.

By restricting ourselves to the law and old covenant we bury our inheritance in the ground and consign ourselves to the roles of dead men walking. Here we have the spiritual discernment of the newt. We instinctively exchange the things of the Spirit to the letter and drag around with us the body of death in the name of life. As a result we can come to the end of our lives without even knowing that we had a life that we never lived to the full.

Jesus made a way in which we can be interwoven with God and He with us. In the ‘way’ which is the new and living way, we become interwoven with each other. In fact we must ‘know’ each other in community in order to God. Our community life begins with genuine communion with God’s son, which gives us relationship with the trinity. This kind of relationship - their relationship - becomes ours as individuals and the church. His church is never a mere institution. It is Christ is all and in all. Thus it is real people in real relationship with each other.

Holy spirit is not an additive to old covenant life - which in Jesus was dead and buried at the cross. Don't make the mistake of attempting to bolt Holy Spirit like a supercharger onto your old covenant engine. It starts well and finishes poorly. Receiving Holy Spirit is of benefit if we are willing for her to lead us into all truth. But not if we are affixed like limpets to ‘Our truth’ and ‘another gospel.’ An old covenant mindset is incapable of supporting life in the Spirit, which means the Kingdom Jesus began will not grow from this soil no matter how much we water and fertilise it with continued attempts to bring life to dead bones.

We can live from this half life if we choose. Christ will not force us to detach from our body of death and our version of the Body that is really a mummy and a corpse. He will grace us with droplets of moisture when - truth be told - we could have enjoyed a niagara of life in the Spirit and been a exemplars of life without limit. We can be sons in spirit and in truth or we can be sons who have embraced a lie. This is the story of the tares. Rejoice and don't complain when your favourite ideas are uprooted by the Lord because you are entering a season of life without limit!
