CHRIST YOUR LIFE

His life as your life

THE IDOL

Why did Jesus address the pharisees as ‘your law? Probably because it was humanity’s law that was a formulation of the knowledge of good and evil. The law has no part in new testament living except maybe as a marker between the non-born again self and the born again self.

The law does not represent God’s character. God represents God’s character and Jesus Christ reveals it to us.

RELATIONSHIP

The law such it is - is the expression of the relationship between created things and the trinity. Thus when Jesus came among us as life, light and logos He did not appear as something new – but as who and what He already was as one with God. Paul calls ourselves and God in relationship the law of the spirit of life. In being received into Christ’s life we made one with this spirit of harmony and wholeness.

But we need to be clear. This is a function of our union with God and has nothing to do with an abstraction called ‘law.’ Why did Jesus address the pharisees as ‘your law? UNION

Jesus and Father are one. We also are one with Jesus, which means that we are joined into the tree of life that is the trinity. We are not Gods but we are very high kings – we are sons and daughters of God. Look at it this way,

“ The being and acts of the Father and the Son are one and not divided (homoousion: "one in being"). This is a central doctrine in Torrance's theology. The truth of the Gospel depends on the homoousion, on the unity of the Son with the Father. For us practically, this doctrine reveals that there is no God behind the back of Jesus Christ for us to fear, and that the life and work of Jesus Christ are intrinsic to the very being of God, so that in Him it is truly God's being and acts as a human.”

GOD-HEAD AND LIFE

But that’s not all. In pursuance of our point above, the life that is ours has not been contracted to a list of abstractions. It is filled out in the person and infinite life if Jesus, God’s Son who makes us one in fellowship with the Holy Family, the life hub of the universe.

This is why to place the law above God or observe the law as a mediator to God or to absorb ourselves in bits and pieces of the law as representatives of God is misguided. Misguided because the law as such is an idol.
