His life as your life

A Christian cosmology based on the law is fundamentally unsound. Life in fullness is found in relationship with God. This is a relationship of love, inclusion and grace. The message of the ages is that Father is totally trustworthy and you are son/daughter of God who belongs – who belongs in their fellowship.

What is this relationship in God? Jesus said, ‘I will be with you and in you.’ By believing you become who you already are: A son/daughter of God who is an Imparter and Distributer of His life. This is how we inherit the earth; how we become fruitful and multiply in the New Creation.

Jesus proclaimed this when He declared Himself the way, the truth and the life. Paul put it more bluntly when he wrote, ‘I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law,
Christ died for nothing!" Again speaking of Christ Pauls writes, ‘For you died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God’ and ‘This is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.’ This time is past, present and future. All creation has been reconciled to God by the cross. We are in the present being reconciled to our inheritance in God and we will enjoy the ultimate and complete reconciliation in eternal life with God and each other.

Before the fall Adam and Eve had a Sabbath life of fellowship with God. Following the resurrection all the sons of God have this Sabbath life restored and more. God is interwoven into their being. The active reconciliation of human beings to God occurs in the incarnation of His Spirit in our person. This is the spirit of sonship and of our being sons of God in spirit and in truth. There are ways of notional sonship. All of them through the law and in iconic things that are not Christ.

God is not described or defined by the law. God is revealed in Jesus Christ. His character and life is seen in the life of the trinity - the life of which it is intended that sons of God share. Baxter Kruger explains the life that is ours – the life that flows from relationship and the life that is ours in perpetuity because in Jesus we and father are one.

When Christianity says God, it says relationship. It says self-giving love expressing itself in boundless fellowship and joyous and untold unity. It does not say self-centred. It does not say removed, distant, detached, indifferent or austere. It does not say lonely or sad or bored or in need. When Christianity says God, it says Father, Son and Spirit existing in a relationship of acceptance and delight and self-giving love, a relationship that is so true, so rich and real and good, so open that the only way we can speak of it is to say that God is three, yet utterly one. For while the Father, Son and Spirit remain eternally distinct, their love for one another is so pure and their fellowship is so deep that any descriptive word short of "one" betrays the sheer reality of their togetherness.” (1)

It is this fellowship of togetherness and oneness that we have been drawn. It is ours now to the extent that we choose to live in it. We can manufacture ‘other gospels’ and deny what is ours burying the talents in the ground. Or we can embrace what we already have and live in the reality that is both Christ and the fellowship of the trinity. We are woven into God and God is woven into us. Sons of God are the effect of the trinity and are holy Because God is holy. This is life in the Spirit.
